It's time to put all that practice into play! Our golfers get to show off how far they've come, while parents and special visitors share in the fun. A day of laughter, memories, and golf that's truly above par — and this page tells you exactly what to expect.

How the golf works
Our goal is an enjoyable experience that makes PlayGolfers want to come back for more. The Foursomes format is chosen with that in mind.
Foursomes
Two players form a team and hit alternate shots at each hole until they hole out. One player tees off on the even holes and one on the odd holes. The handicap allowance is half of the combined total of both players — which lets us accommodate all types of golfers in the same field.
Why alternate shots?
Each player takes part in every second shot, so they experience the whole game — tee shot, approach, chip and putt — without the fatigue of playing every stroke. Younger players stay fresh and engaged from the first hole to the last.
Pitch and Play start
Teams tee off from the registration table in order and follow the PlayGolf signs around the course — over the bridge and on to each hole. A coach is on the course to keep things moving and help with rulings.
Chip-a-ball lucky prize
Chip a ball into the bucket and win a lucky prize! Every player gets a turn at the challenge on the day — no score required, just a good chip.
Order of play
A guide to the afternoon. Golf never runs exactly to the clock, so please be patient with tee times.
What to expect on the day
This is a tournament, but it is a children's tournament first. The aim is for every PlayGolfer to experience a proper golf day — a scorecard, a team-mate, walking the course, shaking hands at the end — at a level that suits their age and stage.
Some children will play brilliantly and some will have a hard hole or two. Both are part of golf, and both are part of what we teach. How the adults around them respond on the day shapes how they feel about the game for a long time afterwards — so the gallery matters as much as the golf.
Local rules for parents
Every course has its local rules. These are ours — they keep the day fair, safe and enjoyable for the players.
Be early, not on time
Please be at the registration table 15 minutes before the start. A team that arrives after the field has gone out may have to wait for a gap or miss holes.
Use the PlayGolf phrases, not new advice
If your child needs a nudge, use the key phrases below — they're the words the coaches use. Please don't introduce new swing tips or club choices on the day; one consistent voice keeps children calm.
Quiet and still during a shot
Stand to the side, phones on silent, and hold conversation until the ball has been struck — for every player in the group, not only your own.
Scorecards are the team's job
Teams keep their own score with the coach's help. Parents don't record, correct or dispute scores on the day — this is how children learn honesty and ownership in golf.
Cheer for every child
Applaud good shots from all teams. We want every PlayGolfer to leave feeling that the gallery was on their side.
Let the result be the result
Prizes are given for scores and for attitude. Please celebrate whatever your child receives and help them congratulate the others — that is the lesson of the day.
Clubs stay down until it's your turn
No practice swings near other people, no running with clubs, and no walking ahead of a player who is about to hit.
Supervise siblings
Younger brothers and sisters are welcome to watch but must stay with a parent at all times. The course is not a playground on tournament day.
Golf phrases for parents
At PlayGolf we use simple key phrases to activate memory pathways, so golfers can make adjustments and corrections without excessive coaching. Here are the ones to use on the day.
Full swing
- Feet together, pointing to the ball
- Step – step, keeping the ball in the middle of your body
- Front arm nice and straight
- Now wiggle — knees bent. No jiggle!
- Load (cock) your wrists before pulling back
- Backswing at a consistent speed — don't stop, don't lose sight of the ball
Pitching
- Feet and tummy pointing to the ball
- Step step, bend your knees and wiggle
- Load (cock) your wrists, then pull back
- L shape at the back, L shape in front
- Ball must travel high but not far
Chipping
- Feet closer together
- Minimal wrist action — keep your wrists passive
- The green is close, so it's always a little swing
Putting
- Feet close together
- Chicken wings!
- Rock the baby — no wrists when putting
What players should expect
Please read this with your child before the day.
You'll play with a team-mate, taking turns to hit the ball. You'll shake hands on the first tee and again when you finish. You'll keep your score with your team and tell the truth about it. You'll wait quietly while others hit, and you'll say "good shot" when it is one. You'll play the ball as it lies, play at a good pace, and if you're not sure of a rule, you'll ask a coach. And whether you have your best round ever or your worst, you'll finish, thank your group, and stay for prize-giving to clap for everyone else.
What to bring
A checklist for the golf bag and the car.
- Golf clubs — your child's own set, or tell us at RSVP if you need to borrow one
- Collared shirt, shorts or trousers, and closed shoes
- Cap or hat and sunscreen — it's a September afternoon on the Highveld
- A full water bottle with your child's name on it
- A light snack for the course
- A light jacket — it cools down later in the afternoon
- Golf balls and tees — [provided / please bring your own]
- A camera, and patience for the prize-giving photos
